Clayton was a two-year letterman at Northwest in football and basketball from 1951 through 1953. He was second leading scorer on the basketball team while serving as captain of the squad in 1952. He played football at Northwest under Coach Robert "Brick" Mason and basketball coach under Granville "Buttermilk" Harrison.

Clayton transferred to Memphis State University where he earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees. He later did advanced study at the University of Tennessee-Martin.

From 1957 to 1970, Clayton coached basketball at Frayser High School in Memphis. In 1968, when Frayser won the last six consecutive division championships, he was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and headed up the Tennessee All-Star Team. Under the direction of Clayton, Frayser took home the city, district, and regional championships in 1965 and the Memphis City Championship in 1967.

Clayton became basketball coach and athletic director at Raleigh-Egypt High School in 1971. His team won three Best of the Preps awards from 1972 to 1975. Clayton was also named Coach of the Year in 1967, 1968 and 1972. Clayton served as the principal of Houston High School in Germantown, Tenn. from 1989 to 1997. He is still ranked eighth on the Memphis/Shelby County all-time win list with 398 wins, and is 11th in winning percentage at .711.
