While attending Northwest from 1956 to 1958, Thomas, a standout fullback for the Rangers, was selected to play on the 1957 West All-American Team. He served as co-captain for the game, after which he was chosen Best All-Around Back by sportswriters.

The Webb native transferred to Northeast Louisiana University, where he was elected tri-captain by his teammates for the 1959-60 season. His coaching career began in Florida as assistant football coach at Lake City. Two years later, he was named head football coach and athletic director at Union County High School. A win in the Rainbow at Dunnellon, Fla. in 1963 earned him recognition as one of the top five coaches in the state. His three-year record was 27-3-1.

He returned to Mississippi in 1964 when he went into private business and became principal of Sumner Elementary School. Thomas served as Director of the North Delta Planning and Development District from 1968 until his retirement in 1981. He was appointed to the Northwest Board of Trustees in 1984 and continues to serve as a member representing Tallahatchie County.
