Cedric Matthews of Horn Lake, a 1992 graduate of Northwest, led the basketball team in scoring his freshman year with 22 points per game and led the nation in scoring his sophomore year with 48.

After the 1991-92 basketball season, Matthews became the first Ranger and only the second player in school history to score 1,000 or more points in a career with 1,178. He was named Second Team All-American, All-Region, All-State, and All-Star, all in 1992.

He graduated from Delta State University in 1996 as an Academic All-American, was co-MVP in the Gulf South Conference that same year, and was First Team All-Gulf South Conference both years with the Statesmen.

He has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education.
