A graduate of Olive Branch High School where he was a four-year letterman, Brewer served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. The veteran enrolled at Northwest in 1947. As a Ranger, he played right end on offense and left end on defense for 60 minutes of football every game. As an outfielder on the Northwest baseball team, he led Northwest in a win over Perkinston for the junior college championship. In 1951, he graduated from Delta State University, where he attended on a football scholarship, but added baseball and boxing.

Following his time at Delta State, Brewer spent 27 years as vice president and co-owner of W.E. Blain and Sons Roadbuilders and Pavers and Blain Sand and Gravel Producers in Mount Olive. Brewer was very active in public education in Covington County, serving 24 years on the Covington County Board of Education. He also helped build the Mount Olive High School football field and track, which was named John Brewer Field in his honor. He also had a position on the Delta State Alumni Foundation Board of Directors as well as the Pat Harrison Waterway District.
