Hall of Fame
Miles played baseball and basketball at Northwest from 1961 through 1963. In 1962, he led the Ranger basketball team to the finals of the state tournament.
Upon graduation from Northwest, Miles attended Delta State University on a basketball scholarship and was named the team's Best Defensive Player his senior year. That same year, he was also named Mr. Delta State.
From there, Miles was drafted as a pitcher by the Washington Senators, the professional baseball team managed by Ted Williams, one of the game's greatest hitters ever. One highlight of Miles' seven-year big-league career was a strikeout of Mickey Mantle in their only meeting.
Miles served as the head baseball coach at Northwest from 1976-97, and has been the college athletic director for seven seasons. Under his leadership, 20 different championships have been won by Ranger teams. Miles owns a Northwest career coaching record of 556-304-3 and has produced six state championships, seven north division titles, and two region crowns. He has been named Coach of the Year six times and as athletic director, he helped establish the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
Miles was inducted into the MACJC Sports Hall of Fame in April 2007.
