As a high school athlete, this Charleston native played football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. When he arrived at Northwest (1935-37), he continued in that tradition, playing football, basketball, and baseball under coach L.B. Taylor. In 1937, he went to Delta State, where he played football and baseball and was the 1939 singles and doubles champion in intramural tennis. His coaching career began at West Point High School as athletic director and head coach with responsibilities for football, baseball, and girls' basketball. Other high school experience came at Greenwood (1943-45) and at Humes High School (1945-49) in Memphis.
He shifted gears in 1949, when he became a salesman for Lawson-Cavette Sporting Goods Company. It was during this time that Williams began officiating football and basketball in the Memphis area. He officiated Southeastern Conference Football from 1952 through 1968. Rounding out his sporting career, Williams was a member of the five-man Southern Bowling Congress championship team and was the Al Chymia Shrine Tournament golf champion for two years.
