Hall of Fame
This two-year letterman for Northwest basketball, baseball, and track was the All-State captain and leading scorer in basketball in 1958, the same year he was named Best Offensive and Defensive Player. Howell transferred to the University of Mississippi, where he continued playing basketball and baseball. His action at centerfield in 1960 earned him All-Southeastern Conference honors.
The Pope native received his B.S. and master's degrees and completed advanced study at Ole Miss, where he began his career as freshman basketball coach. he served as head boys' basketball coach at Holmes Junior College and was named principal and coach for both boys and girls at Ashland Attendance Center. Howell continued coaching basketball at Magnolia Heights in Senatobia, where he was headmaster from 1970 to 1976.
He left education with the appointment as Motor Vehicle Comptroller for the State of Mississippi, a position he held until 1980. Other gubernational appointments include executive director of the Governor's Office of Job Development and Training, chairman of the Governor's Private Sector Services, Inc., and secretary of the Private Industry Council.
He is presently director of the Vocational Training Program with the Batesville Job Corps Center. Howell was a member of the Northwest Board of Trustees from 1980 through 1990.
Howell was inducted into the MACJC Sports Hall of Fame in April 2010.
