Senatobia is home to the main campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College and to two excellent K-12 school systems: Senatobia Public Schools and Magnolia Heights School.
According to a published history, the City of Senatobia was founded on two sections of land purchased in 1834 from the Chickasaw nation for $1.25 per acre. The name “Senatobia” was derived from the Indian word “ Senatohoba,” which means “white Sycamore” and is a symbol of “rest for the weary.” Senatobia received its charter as a municipality in 1860.
With many residential areas under construction, Senatobia continues to grow at a sustainable pace. It is a great place to own a home, raise a family, and be a part of a caring community. Come and see for yourself.
TATE COUNTY
Tate County is a tale of two uniquely Southern cities—Senatobia and Coldwater. Both towns are full of small-town charm and character. And each town has its own story to tell. Coldwater would tell you of its original location a mile west of where it now sits. It would tell you of the entire town, complete with its churches, businesses, homes and water tower, being moved in 1943 to make room for Arkabutla Lake. It would welcome you to stop in for a visit and suggest that you see its antique shops and other businesses along Hwy 51.
Senatobia also has stories to share. As the county seat of Tate County, Senatobia extends a special invitation for you to stop in to visit the Tate County Courthouse. Tate County’s distinctive Italian Romanesque courthouse was built in 1875 and completely restored in 1998. This beautiful landmark is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Architecturally, our courthouse is the only one of its kind in the entire state.
The Heritage Museum is located in the Tate County Courthouse. The museum’s collections and exhibits are professionally displayed throughout the courthouse. These displays are a must-see for history buffs!
Unique shops line Senatobia’s Front and Main streets downtown. Highway 51 and Norfleet Drive also ask you to visit their antique shops, outlet stores and other specialty shops. Take time to stop and dine at one of our many restaurants.
Tate County is also home to the 33,400-acre Arkabutla Lake and the gentle rolling hills of north Mississippi. Fields are planted in the summer with cotton, soy beans, corn, tomatoes and watermelons. Arkabutla Lake is available for fishing, picnicking and water activities. The casinos are little more than a 30-minute drive to the west.
Tate County is a comfortable place where we say “y’all” and order “sweet tea” with our lunch and dinner. Drivers stop to allow those on foot to cross the street and wave at them for good measure. We live in a unique point in time here in Tate County; we embrace the changes that technology brings but also lovingly hold on to those gentle old habits like chatting over the fence with a neighbor or sipping iced tea on the front porch with a friend. Most of us still say “yes, ma’am” and “no, sir” and teach our children to do the same. And if you stay with us long enough, you’re even apt to hear someone say “Well, bless your heart!”
So just slow down, sit back and take in all of our “Southern” charm. After all, you’re in Tate County...and we sure do welcome you!
