Johnson had established himself as a star athlete in Quitman County before enrolling at Northwest in the fall of 1929. Continuing to demonstrate his versatility, he earned three letters each in football, basketball, and baseball. His three years as a varsity athlete at Northwest, he made All-State or Honorable Mention in all three sports.

Transferring in 1932 to Southwestern in Memphis, Johnson played football and basketball. His gridiron performance against the Crimson Tide so impressed Alabama coach Frank Thomas that Johnson was invited to help coach ends during spring practice in Tuscaloosa. Two of Johnson's trainees were Don Hutson and Paul "Bear" Bryant.

After serving in the Navy, Johnson went to work for Federal Compress, continuing with that company until his retirement. While working in Monroe, he helped coach the Northeast Louisiana University women's basketball team. Since his retirement, he has lived in Winona.
