JACKSON – A record total of 87 Northwest Community College student-athletes have been named to the 2019-20 Academic-All MACJC team, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
This year's total is up from 74 during the 2018-19 academic year, giving Northwest a total of 349 Academic All-MACJC selections over the past six years under former athletic academic advisor Jake Long. The previous record of 80 was set during the 2016-17 academic year.
To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 for a minimum of 24 cumulative hours. Student-athletes with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.79 are recognized with Academic honors, while student-athletes with a 3.8 GPA or higher are awarded with Distinguished honors.
"Our MACJC student-athletes are competitive on the court, on the field and in the classroom," said MACJC Commissioner Steven B. Martin. "I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors and academic advisors for their hard work this year, particularly in these difficult and challenging times. The continued academic excellence of our student-athletes is a testament to their grit, character and integrity."
In addition, the Northwest Lady Rangers basketball team also posted a 3.48 team GPA, earning MACJC All-Academic Team of the Year for women's basketball. Five other Northwest programs also finished with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better, including softball (3.53), women's soccer (3.5), baseball (3.41), football (3.02) and men's basketball (3.01).
Northwest baseball led the way with 19 student-athletes on the MACJC All-Academic Team, while football and women's soccer finished close behind with 18 and 17, respectively.
Softball earned 15 total selections, followed by eight for women's basketball, six for men's soccer and four for men's basketball.
Out of Northwest's 87 all-academic team selections, 29 were recognized with distinguished honors. Those student-athletes are denoted with an asterisk in the list below.
