CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After wrapping up the regular season with a perfect 36-0 record, the Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team opened the week with no movement in the Week Nine NJCAA polls.
The Rangers are the top team from Mississippi and one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the country at the Division II level, joining top-ranked Kirkwood Community College (31-0), and one of just three teams across the country, with NJCAA Divsion I Miami-Dade College the only team at the Division I level with a perfect record at 21-0. In fact, only two other teams at the Division II level have only two losses: #7 Lake-Lumpter State College (23-2), #10 Mott Community College (28-2), and #15 Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (22-2).
With regional and conference tournaments beginning this week, the Rangers have their destiny in their own hands, with action on Wednesday in the Region 23 quarterfinals leading into a chance to host the semifinals and championship on Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1, at Howard Coliseum. A win in the Region 23 Tournament would mean the Rangers would also host the District Championship the next weekend against the winner of the Alabama Community College Conference.
Northwest also kept their strong position in the Massey Rankings, holding at eighth in the latest computer projections. The national volleyball tournament is the goal, hosted in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from November 18-21 at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena.
