SENATOBIA – A 5-for-5 day for
Ryan Skalnik, two-out hitting and solid relief effort from
Austin Towles allowed Northwest to sweep rival Itawamba 8-7 and 9-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Miles Field.
Northwest improved to 10-1 at home on the season and 14-10 overall (6-6 MACJC) with the sweep while ICC dropped to 14-12 and 2-8 in conference play.
(Game 1) Peyton Plumlee worked 6.2 innings and got just enough run support from his team, highlighted by
Jake McPhail's two-run homer in the seventh, as the Rangers held on for an 8-7 win in the opener.
Northwest got off to a great start with three runs in the first, all with two outs, with
Cody Cooper scoring two off a single to right and
Hunter Wilson adding an RBI-single.
ICC cut the lead to 3-2 after two, using a pair of RBI-singles from Tyreque Reed and Russ Payne.
Single runs in the third and fourth innings, off RBIs from
Tanner Lloyd and Skalnik, made it a 5-2 Ranger lead after four.
The teams exchanged single runs in the sixth before Timothy Rowe's two-run homer to right-center put ICC in striking distance at 6-5. McPhail's two-run blast answered Rowe's home run in the bottom of the seventh.
ICC continued to fight back, however, using Kieth Stepter's two-out, two-run double to right-center to make it an 8-7 ballgame.
Koby Busby shut the door after that, retiring five straight in relief to record his second save of the year and eighth of his career. Plumlee improved to 4-1 with the win, scattering five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
(Game 2) Dalton Minton was cruising on the mound and the Rangers led 6-0 in the fourth before ICC mounted a mini-rally and made it a game.
Austin Towles silenced any kind of a comeback, however, allowing one hit in 3.1 innings of relief to close out a two-game sweep.
Skalnik's two-run homer in the first, his fourth of the year, followed by a four-run second inning put the Rangers on top 6-0 after two.
Jamell Newson,
Hunter Bishop and
LeeMarcus Boyd all had run-scoring hits in the second and Boyd extended his career-long reached base streak to a whopping 38 games.
Minton ran into trouble in the fourth after allowing just two hits the first three frames. Ty Wheeler's solo home run to left started the scoring surge for ICC and Wheeler was followed by an RBI-double from Reed and two-run double from Dalton Hudspeth, making it a 6-4 game. Towles entered to get the final out and was nearly untouchable the rest of the way.
Northwest responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth, using an RBI-single from
Hunter Wilson and bases-loaded walk by
Hunter Lacefield for his first collegiate RBI.
Wilson was 3-for-3 in the nightcap, pushing his career-long hit streak to 17 games. The top of the Ranger order was 7-for-10 with four RBIs and five runs scored.
Northwest will hit the road Saturday, April 2, traveling to Copiah-Lincoln for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
