Rangers Explode for 21 Runs in Sweep at Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON – Northwest extended its season-long winning streak to 10 games on Thursday, combining to score 21 runs off 23 hits in a pair of 10-2 and 11-5 wins over the homestanding Gulf Coast Bulldogs.

Northwest improved to 23-8 overall and 14-4 in the MACJC while MGCCC dropped to 14-18 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

Five different Rangers homered on the day, including Stephen Sexton who put an exclamation point on a game two win with a grand slam in the seventh. All told, 11 of Northwest's 23 hits went for extra bases.

Sophomore Stuart Chick set the tone in a game one win, going 2-for-2 with his first collegiate home run and career-high five RBIs. Four other Rangers finished with multiple hits as well.

Behind three-time MACJC Pitcher of the Week, Colt Smith, the Rangers cruised to a 10-2 win in the opener. Smith (6-0, 0.54) scattered two hits, no runs, five walks and three strikeouts on 94 pitches. Peter Barton tossed the final two.

Northwest scored single runs in the second and third off Jamell Newson's sac fly and Chick's sac fly.

Chick added a two-run single in the fifth to make it 4-0, scoring Newson and pinch runner Levert Jernigan Jr., and hit a solo home run in the seventh to make it 5-0.

A four-run eighth then put it away, with Kody Kimbrough hitting a sac fly, LeeMarcus Boyd following with a two-run triple and Chick adding his career-high fifth RBI on another sac fly.

MGCCC's lone runs came in the eighth on Matt Trigg's pinch-hit, two-run homer off Barton.

In a back-and-forth nightcap, it was a six-run seventh, highlighted by Sexton's grand slam, that gave the Rangers the win.

Leading 3-0 in the third off Luke Latham's sac fly and back-to-back home runs from Cody Cooper and Boyd, the Bulldogs rallied with single runs in the third and fourth to pull within 3-2.

Trigg's two-out RBI-double in the fifth tied it before Slater McCarty's RBI-single to second gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

Right on cue, Clay Casey's two-run home run to right-center in the sixth put the Rangers back in front 5-4.

Gulf Coast again rallied to tie the game, this time at 5-5, after Richie Clark's sac fly to center scored JG Miley.

The seventh inning, however, belonged to Northwest. The Rangers plated six runs off three hits and sent nine batters to the plate to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Dalton Dulin's RBI-double to right-center plated Boyd for the go-ahead run. Casey followed with a single and then Sexton put the finishing touches on the Bulldogs with a grand slam.

J.G. Lipscomb (3-1) retired MGCCC in order in the seventh to earn the win in relief.

Northwest will host Northeast on Tuesday, April 14 at 3 p.m.
