SENATOBIA - Nearly everyone in the Northwest lineup made an impact in Friday's 12-5 and 13-6 non-conference sweep of Holmes at Jim Miles Field.
Northwest came away with eight hits in the first contest and 13 in the nightcap, highlighted by a pair of homers from
Peyton Mills and
Ty Leatherwood. The Rangers also used a massive 10-run output in the fifth inning to seal the Game 1 victory.
Will Logsdon (1-1) earned a win in his relief appearance during the opener, while
Jake Savage improved to 3-1 on the mound with his relief victory in Game 2.
Northwest will step back into conference competition on Tuesday, April 6 against Mississippi Delta for a 3/6 P.M. twinbill.
Game 1 - Northwest 12, Holmes 5
With the Rangers down 5-1 in the fifth, Holmes issued three straight walks to
Benton Williams,
Caleb Hobson and
Noah Hattier to lead off a 10-run bottom frame.
Cameron Lancaster followed with a two-run single and the rest of the inning was highlighted by an RBI-single from
Tyler Byrd, a two-run double from Williams and an RBI-single from Hobson.
Prior to the big fifth inning, Northwest took a 1-0 lead in the second, thanks to an RBI-single from
Brady Logan that scored
Peeko Townsend.
Holmes then responded with three runs in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth, before Logsdon emerged from the bullpen to quiet the Bulldgos' bats.
Leading 11-5, Northwest added another run for good measure in the bottom of the sixth, as an RBI-grounder from
Alan Kivett scored Townsend.
Logsdon issued one walk and a strikeout in the final 2.1 innings, while
Hammer Franks earned the start and lasted three complete innings, with five strikeouts and no walks or runs allowed.
Game 2 - Northwest 13, Holmes 6
Leatherwood and
Dylan Hale finished 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Rangers to a 13-6 win in the nightcap.
Northwest trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the third inning, before a six-run effort made it a 7-3 advantage. The Rangers would pad five additional runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to solidify the sweep.
Leatherwood's solo homer led off the scoring in the second and a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases in the third for a two-run single from Leatherwood.
Two more walks allowed Mills and Hobson to reach and
Cade Bell would score both on a two-run single.
Mills led off the fifth with a solo shot to left center, his 11th home run of the season. Bell then reached on a single and
Garrett Riggs followed with a walk, before back-to-back RBIs from Hale and
Peyton Puckett gave way to a pair of RBI-singles from
McGreger Lee and
Wesley Lester.
Bell would also drive in the final run of the game, a single that scored
Cade Spratlin to seal the deal for the Rangers.
Savage struck out one batter in the sixth and allowed no runs, hits or walks in his relief victory.
Judah Buckner also tossed the seventh inning, walking two batters but allowing no damage done by the Bulldogs.
