Northwest Baseball Notches Road Sweep at Calhoun

TANNER, Ala. – Two solid outings on the mound from sophomores Jarod Wright and Dalton Minton was the difference on Saturday, as Northwest came away with a pair of 4-3 and 2-0 wins at Calhoun.

Winners in eight of its last nine games, Northwest improved to 11-3 overall, while Calhoun fell to 8-9. The Rangers won the season series 3-1 over the Warhawks.

Wright picked up his second win of the season in the opener, giving up three earned runs and striking out six batters in six innings of work. Minton (3-1) went the distance in the finale and gave up three hits while adding three strikeouts.

After a three-game hiatus, David Herrington made his impression felt early in Game 1, sending the first pitch into left field for his first collegiate home run to give Northwest a quick 1-0 advantage.

After a one-out double to open the inning, a wild pitch in the top of the second brought Jordan Volner in from third to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Calhoun took its first lead in the bottom of the second, 3-2, thanks to a three-run bomb to right from Collins Robinson.

Northwest tied things up in the fourth inning at 3-3 as Herrington doubled and later scored from third on a wild pitch.

Jack McClure helped the Rangers regain the lead in the sixth, leading off the inning with a single and scoring off a wild pitch and a throwing error to put Northwest back up for good, 4-3.

Calhoun threatened to take back control in the bottom of the seventh, as the Warhawks reached base off a pair of hits. J.G. Lipscomb came in and ended any kind of scoring threat, earning his fourth save of the season and fifth of his career.

Herrington finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI to lead the Rangers at the plate. Jordan Volner also went 1-for-2 with a double.

Runs were scarce for a majority of Game 2, despite a combined seven hits from both teams.

Northwest had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the third, as Justin Milam doubled to left field and reached third on a wild pitch. A fly ball to center, however, ended the inning for the Rangers with no runs on the board.

Calhoun also had a chance to strike first in the fourth inning, with Hayden Bradford reaching base on a single and advancing to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. Ireland then followed with a groundout to Minton, thus ending the threat from the Warhawks.

Northwest finally hit the jackpot in the top of the seventh thanks to a left-field double from Will Brooks. A flyout from Hunter White advanced Brooks to third and McClure was hit by a pitch, setting up an error at third base that brought in both runners and gave the Rangers the 2-0 lead.

Calhoun then went down in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the Northwest sweep.

Brooks and Milam led the Rangers at the plate, combining to go 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two stolen bases.

Northwest will hit the road once again this week, traveling to Jackson State (Tenn.) on Wednesday, March 8. First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m.
