JACKSON, Tenn. – Northwest fell on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at Jackson State, with the hosts holding off the Rangers 10-6 and 4-3 to win the season series.
Jackson State improved to 11-9 with the sweep, while Northwest dropped to 11-5.
Northwest had to rally from a 5-1 deficit after three frames in the opener, with walks and hit-by-pitches gifting the Generals the lead.
Sadler Goodwin's two-out, two-run single opened the scoring in the second and the Generals tacked on three more in the third thanks to a bases-loaded walk, sac fly and RBI-single from Alberto Lozada.
Northwest started to scratch its way back in the fourth, scoring a single run on
Brooks Boolos' RBI-single to cut it to 5-2.
Jack McClure's leadoff homer to right-center in the fifth, followed by a throwing error and
Baron Davies RBI-single, then knotted the game at 5-5.
JSCC pushed back in front 6-5 in its half of the fifth on Nick Proto's RBI-single before
David Herrington came around to score in the sixth to knot it again at 6-6.
The General bats got hot in the sixth, with the first four batters reaching base safely. Ian Bibiloni's RBI-double put JSCC ahead for good and they'd tack on three more in the frame to pull away for a 10-6 win.
Northwest got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a base running mistake and a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
The Generals out-hit the Rangers 13-11 in the opener, with the top of the JSCC lineup going 8-for-17 with seven RBIs. Davies was 3-for-4 to lead the Rangers, with Herrington and Boolos adding two hits apiece.
Christian Vick (2-2) got the win in 2.0 innings of relief for JSCC, scattering two hits and three strikeouts.
Nathan Harrison (2-2) suffered the loss in one inning of relief work.
After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first in the nightcap, Northwest took the early 2-0 lead in the second.
Hunter White singled and came around to score on an error before Herrington's two-out single scored
Spencer Cayten after a single and pair of stolen bases.
JSCC rallied to take its first lead of the nightcap in the bottom half of the second, scoring four unearned runs after a pair of Ranger errors.
Ian Hawkins allowed a leadoff single but got back-to-back strikeouts before two infield errors kept the inning alive. Five more Generals came to the plate, with Conner Sanders' two-run single providing the final blow.
Northwest cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth, using Herrington's two-out, RBI-triple to center. The Rangers had a chance to do more in the inning with runners at the corners, but another base running mistake ended the threat.
Kyle Moore was excellent on the mound in relief of Hawkins to keep the Rangers close, scattering three hits, no runs, six strikeouts and no walks the final three frames to keep it 4-3 after six.
Plenty of drama ensued in the final frame, with Northwest getting the tying run on with two outs. Herrington walked, advanced to second on a groundout and was coming around to score after
Aaron Campbell's infield single, but stumbled running home and was questionably called out to end the game. Herrington easily beat the tag on the throw home, sliding his entire hand across the plate before he was tagged, nonetheless, was ruled out despite a lengthy argument.
Trevor Mace got the win for JSCC in three innings of relief, with Jackson South earning his first save of the year. Hawkins (0-2) was the hard-luck loser for Northwest, allowing four unearned runs off six hits while striking out five.
Northwest will return home on Friday, playing host to Mississippi Delta and Coahoma in single games at 2 and 5 p.m.
