SENATOBIA – A big day at the plate lifted Northwest to an MACJC doubleheader sweep over Pearl River Saturday afternoon, as the Rangers picked up a pair of 7-1 and 11-1 victories at Jim Miles Field.
Northwest moved to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the sweep, while PRCC fell to 17-7 overall and 2-4 in league play.
(Game 1) Leading 2-0 after three innings of play, the Northwest bats came alive in the fourth inning as the Rangers scored four runs to pull away for the 7-1 victory.
Spencer Cayten helped put the Rangers on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring
Hunter Lacefield on an RBI-single.
LeeMarcus Boyd followed with a sac fly to center in the third that scored
Jamell Newson and put Northwest ahead 2-0.
Hunter Bishop sparked the scoring surge in the fourth thanks to a two-run double into left-center. Northwest added two more runs in the inning when
Tanner Lloyd scored on a passed ball and
Hunter Wilson singled to left field, scoring Bishop, to extend the Rangers' advantage to 6-0.
Pearl River responded in the sixth with Peyton Lee's RBI-single through the right side to cut the deficit to 6-1. The Rangers would get the run back in the seventh, however, as
David Herrington's RBI-double sent Boyd home, capping the scoring at 7-1.
Boyd and Herrington combined to go 4-for-7 with two RBIs, while Bishop finished with two RBIs of his own.
Sophomore right-hander
Colt Smith (2-1) allowed just one run in six innings of work and finished with seven strikeouts.
J.R. Miller tossed the final three innings to notch his second save of the season.
Carter Hankins and Tyler Reid each went 2-for-4 in Game 1 to lead Pearl River.
(Game 2) Five innings was all the Rangers needed in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, as Northwest drove in five runs each in the third and fifth innings to earn the 11-1 run-rule win.
Cody Cooper doubled and later reached home on a wild pitch to get the Rangers on the board in the second inning. After Pearl River scored on a bases loaded walk in the top of the third, Northwest answered with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from
Aaron Campbell and Bishop.
Leading 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Rangers collected five more runs with RBIs from Bishop, Boyd,
Hunter Wilson and
Jake McPhail. Cooper ended the game for the Rangers with a bases loaded walk, sealing the 11-1 win.
Koby Busby came on in relief of
Jarod Wright in the third inning and collected his first win of the season, giving up two hits and striking out two batters. Peyton Lee went four innings for Pearl River and gave up six runs and six hits while fanning six Ranger batters.
Northwest out-hit the Wildcats 11-3 in Game 2, with two hits coming from Lucas Scott in the No. 9 hole.
Northwest will be back in action on Tuesday, March 22, traveling to Coahoma (9-12-1, 3-1 MACJC). First pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
