BOONEVILLE – For his efforts in an overtime win over 14th-ranked Hinds last Thursday, Northwest sophomore kicker/punter
Jim Speights has been selected the MACJC and NJCAA Special Teams Player of the Week.
The weekly conference award marks the second of his Ranger career and fourth for a Northwest football player this season (
Justin Crawford x2,
Gardner Minshew).
Speights hit all three field goal attempts (tied career-high), including a career-long 43-yarder and game-tying 18-yarder to force overtime, in the Rangers' 38-37 win. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 in point after attempts and averaged 40.4 yards on five punts.
A second team all-state punter as a freshman, Speights is second in the league in scoring among kickers with 48 points, connecting on 9-of-11 field goals and 21-of-22 PATs this season.
Northwest (5-0, 2-0) hosts Holmes (2-3, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. for Homecoming.
