Indians Edge Rangers in Pair of One-Run Games

FULTON – With a chance to put some distance at the top of the conference standings with a sweep, Northwest was instead handed two, one-run losses on Wednesday afternoon at Roy Cresap Field, falling 7-6 and 4-3 to host Itawamba.

Northwest fell to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in the MACJC while ICC improved to 10-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference standings.

(Game 1) Itawamba jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first off Ranger starter Jonathan Lindsey and chased him in the fourth after taking a 5-1 lead.

Tanner Poole led off the game for ICC with a double and scored a batter later on Brayden Owen's RBI-single. Owen then scored on a sac fly by Seth Young, making it 2-0 Indians. Aided by two Ranger errors, ICC scored two more, and later added a fifth run on Hayden Williams' RBI-groundout.

Ian Painter came on in relief of Lindsey with one out in the bottom of the fourth and kept the Rangers in striking distance.

Trailing 6-2 entering the seventh, LeeMarcus Boyd's solo home run to left pulled Northwest within 6-3. The Rangers would then rally to tie it in the eighth, sending eight batters to the plate.

Luke Latham capped a 3-for-4 game with an RBI-single with one out in the inning, followed by an RBI-single from Kody Kimbrough. Then, with two down and runners at the corners, an error at short allowed Latham to score the tying run.

ICC would respond in the bottom half, however, scoring Drake Rowton on a wild pitch with two outs to take a 7-6 lead.

Dalton Dulin singled to center, was sacrificed to second and was standing on third after a passed ball with one out in the ninth, but back-to-back groundouts left the tying run stranded at third.

John Peugh (1-0) tossed 1.2 innings of relief to earn the win, while Painter (1-1) was the hard-luck loser. Painter threw 4.1 innings, scattering six hits, two runs and six strikeouts.

ICC out-hit Northwest 13-10, led by Poole's 3-for-5 outing. Four other Indians had multiple hits.

(Game 2) ICC led 1-0 after an inning of play thanks to a bases-loaded walk issued to Gable Butler and the lead would hold true into the fourth inning.

The Indians then broke the game open with three runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Owen's RBI-double scored two and Timothy Rowe's double scored a third run.

Northwest, however, responded with three runs of its own in the fifth to pull within 4-3. Boyd's RBI-single scored Hunter Wilson and Dulin's two-run double with two outs scored both Boyd and pinch runner Levert Jernigan Jr. The rally ended on Dulin's double though when he was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple.

Trenton Stringer then shut the door on Northwest the final two frames, tossing a complete game six-hitter. He scattered three hits, eight strikeouts and five walks. J.G. Lipscomb (1-1) started and went the first 3.2 innings, allowing four runs off seven hits.

Northwest will play Co-Lin on Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m. Due to unplayable field conditions at Jim Miles Field, the doubleheader has been moved to South Panola High School located at 601 Tiger Drive, Batesville, MS 38606.
