Northwest Tops Jackson State 10-5

SENATOBIA – Luke Latham went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and seven other Rangers added a hit as 17th-ranked Northwest took down Jackson State 10-5 on Monday night at Jim Miles Field to snap a six-game losing streak to the Generals.

Northwest improved to 13-6 overall and 7-2 at home while JSCC fell to 14-9, just its third loss to Northwest in the last 13 meetings.

Also, with the victory, head coach Mark Carson earned career win No. 271, tying him for second all-time with mentor Donny Castle.

The Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the first when LeeMarcus Boyd singled and later scored off an error and Latham singled to left with two down to score a pair.

An RBI-groundout by both Blake Rowlett and Zach Phillips pulled Jackson State within 3-2 in the third before the Rangers responded with runs off Clay Casey's RBI-single and a second General error to make it 5-2 Northwest.

Two more runs in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-2, with Dalton Dulin scoring Boyd on an RBI-groundout and Stuart Chick coming around to score on a passed ball after he singled.

The teams traded single runs in the seventh on Chase Diggs' solo homer and J.G. Lipscomb's RBI-single.

Leading 10-4 heading into the ninth, JSCC scored off a passed ball with two outs to make the final 10-5.

In a predetermined three innings of work, freshman Landon McFadden (2-0) got the win by scattering three hits, two runs and two strikeouts. Davis Brown, Hunter Lacefield, Grant Black, Ian Painter and Koby Busby pitched by committee to finish things out, allowing three runs off five hits in six innings.

Hits were even on the night at eight apiece. Diggs, Zach Evers and Rowlett had two each for the visiting Generals.

Northwest travels to Itawamba on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch from Roy Cresap Field.
