MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Sophomore
James Clark went 5-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and two runs driven in to help 17th-ranked Northwest split a doubleheader with Dyersburg State on Wednesday afternoon at USA Stadium.
With the split, Northwest moved to 11-5 while Dyersburg is now 9-8.
(Game 1) The Eagles plated six runs over the first two innings off Northwest starting pitcher
Grant Black and were able to put the game out of reach early. Chris Brown had a two-run double and Tucker Cozort added a two-run single for four, quick RBIs.
Northwest got a single run back in the second off
Clay Casey's RBI-double and another on Clark's solo homer to left in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-2 after four.
Austin Looker's solo home run to left in the fifth sealed an 8-3 win.
The top of the Eagle lineup finished 5-for-10 with five runs scored and four RBIs, out-hitting Northwest 9-7.
Cody Purvis got the win in four innings of work. Mitchell Lovell and Adam Wyse combined to throw the final three.
(Game 2) Dyersburg again jumped out to an early lead with three runs off five hits in the bottom of the first, using an RBI-double from Blake Schunk and Looker RBI-single.
Northwest got within 3-2 in the second after RBI-singles by
Hunter Wilson and
LeeMarcus Boyd, but the Eagles scored in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead after two.
Trailing 5-2 after three, the Ranger bats finally woke up. Northwest outscored Dyersburg 6-1 over the final four innings with nine hits, to rally for an 8-6 come-from-behind win.
Wilson's two-run double down the leftfield line tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth before
Levert Jernigan Jr.'s pinch-hit, RBI-single into left field plated Wilson for the go-ahead run.
Casey then blasted a solo home run to left for good measure to lead off the seventh and cap the victory.
Northwest pounded out 15 hits, led by two each from Boyd,
Dalton Dulin, Latham, Wilson and
J.G. Lipscomb. Dulin also snagged two more stolen bases to give him a nation-leading 22.
Ian Painter earned the win in two innings of relief while
Koby Busby tossed a scoreless seventh for his third save.
Northwest will host 8th-ranked Jones County on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. on NJCAA-TV.
