SENATOBIA – Three outstanding pitching performances by freshmen
Landon McFadden,
J.G. Lipscomb and
Jonathan Lindsey helped Northwest sweep Coahoma in a doubleheader Tuesday night at Jim Miles Field by 5-2 and 1-0 finals.
Northwest improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the MACJC while Coahoma dropped to 1-15 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Rangers have now won 18 straight against the Tigers.
(Game 1) After giving up two runs in the top half of the first, both with two outs, McFadden hung four consecutive zeroes before making way for Lipscomb to close things out with four scoreless himself in his Ranger pitching debut.
Northwest scored three runs in its half of the first to push ahead 3-2, taking advantage of two Coahoma miscues and two walks.
Jamell Newson walked, stole second and later scored on an error.
Stephen Sexton then followed with an RBI-groundout before
James Clark scored on an error from third.
The Rangers added single runs in the second and seventh innings to close out the win in a scheduled 9-inning game.
McFadden scattered five hits, two runs, three strikeouts and three walks to earn his first career win while Lipscomb scattered two hits, no runs and five strikeouts for his first collegiate save. Dustin Allen (0-3) took the loss for Coahoma despite a solid five innings.
Coahoma out-hit Northwest 7-6 in the loss but committed four errors against two for the Rangers.
(Game 2) Locked in a pitcher's duel between Lindsey and Coahoma's Adam McPhail, it took a
Clay Casey solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a scoreless game.
Lindsey entered with a no-hitter in the seventh, but gave up back-to-back singles and was relieved by
Koby Busby, who shut the door. Busby only threw two pitches, inducing a fielder's choice and 6-3 double play to end the game for his second save.
Luke Latham was 3-for-3 with a double and Casey finished 2-for-2 with the game-winning home run. The final hit tally was 7-2 in favor of the Rangers.
Northwest returns to action on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Millington, Tenn., facing Dyersburg State in two, 7-inning games.
