CHARLOTTE - Just 24 hours removed from earning his first-ever MACCC Defensive Player of the Week honor, Northwest sophomore linebacker
Sam Brumfield was also extended the same recognition by the NJCAA, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Brumfield, a native of Pearl, racked up 14 total tackles in the Rangers' 28-2 victory at Northeast last week, helping Northwest finish the regular season 9-0 and 6-0 in the MACCC North Division. He also added two tackles-for-loss, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a sack to lead the charge in shutting out the Tigers' offense.
For the second straight season, Brumfield is leading the team in tackles, currently owning 73 on the season. He also ranks second on the team with four quarterback hurries.Â
Brumfield is only the second Northwest defender to earn NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week accolades, as
Jykeveous Hibbler received those honors following the Rangers' Week One victory against Mississippi Gulf Coast. Additionally, quarterback
Ren Hefley still remains the only offensive Northwest player to garner NJCAA POTW accolades.
Ranked No. 3 in the most recent NJCAA Division I Football Rankings, Northwest will put its unbeaten record to the test on Saturday, November 5 against Jones College. Kickoff is set for 2 P.M. at Bobby Franklin Field, with live coverage available on Ranger TV (nwccrangers.com/watch) and Action News 5 Plus.
