SENATOBIA - Northwest Mississippi Community College is mourning the loss of former Ranger football and men's basketball student-athlete
Domonique Harris, who passed away Thursday, December 9, at the age of 28.
Harris spent two seasons with the Northwest football program from 2011-12 under former head coach Ricky Woods, where he helped the Rangers to a combined 14-5 overall record, an MACJC North Division runner-up finish in 2011 and a division co-championship in 2012. It was his time as the starting quarterback in 2012 where the Rangers earned an 8-2 overall record and the program's first bowl game appearance since the 1998 season.
During his stellar sophomore campaign, Harris completed 158 passes on 267 attempts, passing for 18 touchdowns and 2,361 total yards. His career-defining effort came in a shootout at East Mississippi on October 18, 2012, where he passed for 421 yards and four touchdowns in a narrow 56-49 loss to the Lions.
Harris capped off his Northwest football career on a high note, helping the Rangers to a 47-36 triumph against Texas-based Kilgore College in the Brazos Valley Bowl on December 1, 2012. In that performance, Harris completed 19 of his 23 pass attempts for 252 yards and three touchdowns, earning Offensive MVP honors.
On the court, Harris played two seasons for former coaches Jimmy Adams and Bubba Skelton. Though he only made seven starts, Harris made an immediate impact as a key reserve during his freshman campaign, providing a spark of 9.7 points per game off the bench to finish as the team's second-leading scorer with 224 total points. He also earned his spot as the Rangers' fourth-leading rebounder, averaging 3.6 per game for a season total of 83 rebounds.
Harris' basketball talent only increased in his 2012-13 sophomore season, as the Southaven native helped the Rangers to a 19-8 overall record and the Region 23 Tournament semifinals. Along with teammates DeMarcus McVay and Charles Eaton, Harris made up a formidable triple threat in the scoring column, averaging 14.8 points per game, along with 7.2 rebounds per game and a team-high 41 steals.
Perhaps his most memorable effort on the court came on November 15, 2012, when Harris scored a career-best 33 points with 20 rebounds in a 97-85 victory against Copiah-Lincoln. The game marked one of eight 20-point games in his Northwest career and he concluded his time on the hardwood by being named to the 2013 Region 23 All-Tournament Team, along with his teammate Eaton.
Harris later continued his education and athletic career at Benedict College, where he spent the 2017-18 seasons on the Tigers' football roster. He passed for 631 yards and three touchdowns during his junior season, only to blow up for 1,132 passing yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior, helping Benedict to a 6-3 overall record and a 4-2 conference mark.
Off the field, Harris was a criminal justice major at Benedict.
Memorial arrangements have been set for Harris, beginning with a wake set for Friday, December 17 from 5-7 P.M. and a 1 P.M. funeral ceremony on Saturday, December 18. Both will be held at Fredonia Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1250 Peabody Avenue in Tunica, Miss.
