Northwest Sweeps Coahoma to Move Into MACJC Lead

SENATOBIA – Behind a four-hit shutout from Carson Stinnett in the opener and seven different Rangers with a hit in the nightcap, Northwest swept Coahoma by 8-0 and 8-3 finals Wednesday to extend its winning streak to 11 games.

With the sweep, No. 15 Northwest improved to 24-6 overall and 13-3 in the MACJC to move into sole possession of first in the league. Coahoma fell to 17-15 and 3-11 in conference play.

The Rangers will hit the road this weekend to open up a grueling eight-game road stretch in which they'll face three NJCAA Top 15 opponents in Hinds, Itawamba and Meridian.

Game 1 – Northwest 8, Coahoma 0 (7)

Stinnett escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first and allowed just three hits the final six frames to improve to 6-0 and lift the Rangers to a run-rule win in the opener.

Hayden Leatherwood hit a two-run homer to right to put the Rangers on top 2-0 after one, his third of the year and 18th of his career.

Northwest extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth, with Bradley Smith's two-run single scoring Garrett Riggs and Ben Van Cleve.

Leatherwood then plated the Rangers' eighth run of the game in the sixth to secure the run-rule win on an RBI-double. He finished 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs.

Brayland Skinner was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot and Kelton Hall finished 2-for-2.

Game 2 – Northwest 8, Coahoma 3

Coahoma struck first in the nightcap before a six-run second inning for the Rangers and outstanding relief effort from Trent Bunting allowed Northwest to close out the sweep.

Skinner's home run to right helped the Rangers tie the game at 1-1 after one.

The Tigers pushed back in front 2-1 in the top of the second but Northwest came firing right back with six runs on six hits to lead 6-2 after two. Northwest used Tanner Leggett's sac fly, Hammer Franks' two-run single and RBI-singles from Ben Van Cleve, Blake Miller and Peyton Mills.

Jake Tyrone started and only allowed two earned runs on two hits but hit six batters and walked three and was pulled with the bases loaded in the fourth.

Bunting promptly struck out Kyler Johnson to leave three Tigers on base in the fourth and struck out all five batters he faced to keep Coahoma off the board.

Mills homered to left-center in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Seven different Rangers combined for nine hits in the nightcap. Bunting improved to 3-1 in relief action.
