Rangers Swept by No. 4 Jones College in MACJC Opener

SOUTHAVEN – A pair of impressive late inning outputs from fourth-ranked Jones College helped the visiting Bobcats to a sweep of No. 16 Northwest on Saturday afternoon in the MACJC opener for both teams.

Though still considered a home doubleheader for the Rangers, the matchup was moved from Jim Miles Field to the campus of DeSoto Central High School due to field conditions.

Northwest fell to 11-5 overall and 0-2 in the MACJC as Jones moved to 17-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Rangers will look to get back on track on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Northeast at 3/6 p.m. in Senatobia.

GAME 1  #4 Jones College 9, #16 Northwest 5

Down to its last strike, the Bobcats rallied off five runs in the top of the ninth inning to stun Northwest in a 9-5 final in Game 1.

With a runner on second, Brandon Hale singled to short and advanced off a fielding error at first base, allowing the tying run to score. An RBI-single and a three-run home run soon followed, giving the Bobcats the sudden 9-5 lead.

Prior to the ninth, both teams had gone back and forth with runs scored in every single inning. Northwest struck first with Ben Van Cleve's RBI-single through the left side in the bottom of the first before Jones tied it in the second off Bailee Hendon's RBI-groundout to second.

Jones briefly took a 2-1 lead in the third off Hale's RBI-double down the left field line but once again, the Rangers responded with Brayland Skinner's two-run single to right in the fourth inning to regain a 3-2 advantage.

After the Bobcats tied things up at 3-3 in the fifth, the Rangers would keep Jones scoreless over the next two innings while also building a 5-3 lead, thanks to a wild pitch in the sixth and a bunt single from Van Cleve in the seventh.

Jones would add a run in the eighth after Hendon's hit by pitch before unleashing the barrage of runs in the ninth to deny the Rangers a conference-opening victory.

Northwest finished with eight hits, highlighted by a 4-for-4 day from Skinner with two RBIs. Van Cleve was the only other Ranger to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Parker Stinnett pitched a solid outing for Northwest, striking out four against two walks in seven innings. Reed Harding (1-1) was tabbed with the loss in a relief effort, allowing five earned runs in two innings.

Coleton Ausbern got the win for the Bobcats in relief, pitching the final five innings with three strikeouts and only one earned run allowed.

GAME 2  #4 Jones College 6, #16 Northwest 2

Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh, Northwest saw Jones score three runs in the top of the frame to take a 6-2 win and the sweep.

Other than the second inning, both teams struggled to plate runs for most of the contest, despite nine hits for the Bobcats.

Jones took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second off a bases loaded walk and an RBI-single to right from Henry, only to see the Rangers respond in the bottom of the frame with Peyton Mills' RBI-triple at the wall in right center.

Henry once again got Jones on the board in the sixth with a single to right center, but Skinner brought the Rangers right back with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to set up a 3-2 score heading into the seventh.

Much like the final inning of Game 1, the Bobcats once again feasted upon the Ranger relievers and delivered three additional runs off an error at short and a pair of RBI singles to push the advantage to 6-2.

Northwest would get Mills on second after a four-pitch walk in the bottom of the seventh but the Rangers could do no more, suffering the sweep to the Bobcats.

Skinner, Mills and Van Cleve made up the only three hits for the Rangers in the nightcap.

Dalton Fowler (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season, pitching five innings with four strikeouts against seven walks. Brady Greene got the win for Jones, pitching 5.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
