Pitching Performances Guide Rangers to Sweep of Northeast

SENATOBIA – Resiliency on the mound helped No. 17 Northwest bounce back from Saturday's conference-opening sweep, as the Rangers gathered a sweep of their own against Northeast at Jim Miles Field Tuesday night.

Carson Stinnett and Jake Tyrone both put together gritty efforts as starters, while Trent Bunting and Colton Peel came through clutch in relief.

Northwest improved to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in conference, as Northeast dropped to 10-10 and 0-4 in the MACJC.

GAME 1 – Northwest 11, Northeast 7

A disastrous seventh inning for Northeast led to six Ranger runs on three hits and three errors, as Northwest defeated the Tigers 11-7 in Tuesday's opening contest.

Northwest got on the board in the bottom of the first with Tanner Leggett's RBI-single up the middle, but the Tigers quickly responded in the second with an RBI-single from Blake Goodin to tie things up at 1-1.

Northeast then made things interesting in the top of the third, teeing off on back-to-back homers from Tyler Samaniego - a three-run shot - and Aaron Lipsey, pushing the Tigers' lead to 5-1.

Northwest would get the runs right back in the bottom of the frame as a leadoff triple from Brayland Skinner set up an RBI-single from Leggett, which was followed by an RBI-single from Ben Van Cleve and a two-run homer from Hammer Franks.

Tied at 5-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers took advantage of miscues from the Tigers to push across six runs off a bases loaded walk to Hayden Leatherwood, a fielders' choice RBI from Franks, an RBI-single from Booth and three more runs off Northeast errors to take an 11-5 advantage.

Northeast would get a pair of runs back in the top of the ninth off a fielders' choice and an RBI-double, but Daniel Shelton would limit the damage and preserve the win for the Rangers.

Skinner continued his momentum at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 to lead the Northwest bats. Leggett and Booth each went 2-for-4 with a combined three RBIs.

After getting rocked through the first couple of innings, Stinnett settled in over the next three frames to limit Northeast to no runs and four hits, escaping a bases loaded jam in the sixth. The sophomore transfer finished the day with six innings pitched, 11 hits, five earned runs and four strikeouts against two walks.

Trent Bunting (2-0) got the win in relief for Northwest, tossing two strikeouts over two innings, as Shelton came on to finish out the ninth.

Jake Christa was credited the loss for the Tigers, despite throwing seven strikeouts over six innings.

GAME 2 – Northwest 2, Northeast 0

A two-run bottom of the first proved to be all the Rangers needed in the nightcap, as Northwest used a solid six-inning outing from Tyrone to keep the Tigers and earn the sweep.

Leggett and Van Cleve reached base on a pair of errors from the Tigers and both would later score, with Van Cleve's run coming off an RBI-single through the right side from Kelton Hall.

Northeast got its best shot to even things up in the top of the fifth as the Tigers loaded the bases with one out, but Braxton Miller grounded out into a 6-4-3 double play to end the scoring threat.

Northeast once again found itself with one more chance in the top of the seventh, but Colton Peel entered in relief to strike out both remaining batters for the save and the Ranger victory.

Tyrone (1-0) collected his first win of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out seven against four walks in 6.1 innings of work.

Hall led the Rangers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, as Skinner, Franks and Peyton Mills finished with one hit apiece.

Cooper Cox got the loss for Northeast, despite two unearned runs and nine strikeouts.

Northwest will conclude its extended March homestand on Saturday afternoon, as the Rangers host Copiah-Lincoln from Jim Miles Field at 2/5 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available for both games on nwccrangers.com.
