Minton's Gem Helps Rangers Split at Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON – Northwest split a road doubleheader at Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field, dropping a 24-10 decision in the opener before Dalton Minton's compete-game four-hitter helped the Rangers to a 3-1 game two victory.

Northwest moved to 23-13 overall and 11-7 in conference play while MGCCC moved to 20-12 and 9-7 in the MACJC.

In the midst of a season-long, 10-game road swing, Northwest is 3-1 with trips remaining at Mississippi Delta, Hinds and Meridian.

**UPDATE 5/5/17...Gulf Coast had to forfeit its game one win for playing an ineligible player and Northwest was awarded a 7-0 forfeit win.

Game 1 – Gulf Coast 24, Northwest 10 (7 innings)

Northwest led 2-0 after a half inning before the wheels absolutely fell off. Jarod Wright (4-3) lasted 0.2 innings and the Rangers ran through six different arms in a 24-10 rout.

MGCCC plated all seven of its runs in the first inning with two outs, tying the game at 2-2 on a questionable balk call that sent everything into motion in a disastrous bottom of the first. The Bulldogs led 7-2 after one and tacked on eight more to lead 15-2 after two innings.

Aaron Campbell's solo homer to right and a wild pitch pulled Northwest within 15-4 after three before a nine-run fifth for the Bulldogs stretched their lead to a commanding 24-4 after five.

Northwest welcomed new MGCCC pitcher Oren Myrick with five runs in the seventh, highlighted by David Herrington's two-run double, before a 24-10 run-rule final.

MGCCC out-hit Northwest 20-11 and was aided by a season-high eight Ranger errors. Chase Fagan was 4-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBIs as nine different Bulldogs had at least one hit.

Dakota Dailey was 3-for-5 to lead seven Rangers with a hit. Campbell added three RBIs.

Chris Crosby (6-3) went 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned) and striking out eight to get the win for MGCCC.

Game 1 – Northwest 3, Gulf Coast 1

Dalton Minton tossed one of the best games in his Ranger career, scattering four hits, no earned runs and seven strikeouts for his third complete-game of the year, to lift Northwest to a 3-1 win in the nightcap for an important road split.

Minton (6-2) allowed his lone run in the first on a sac fly before hanging six consecutive zeros to close the game.

Northwest led 2-1 after one, using RBI-doubles from Campbell and Zack Pope, and it was all Minton after that.

Brody Catt's solo shot in the fourth for his first collegiate home run gave the Rangers some breathing room, leading 3-1 after four.

After getting shelled for 20 hits in the opener, MGCCC managed just four in the nightcap, two coming in the final frame.

Herrington (17 games), Dailey (16) and Campbell (11) each extended their reached base streaks, while Campbell has at least one RBI in 11 straight games.

Northwest will travel to 20th-ranked Mississippi Delta (22-12, 9-7) on Wednesday, April 19 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Live video/stats will be available.
