SENATOBIA – Freshmen
Will Brooks and
Baron Davies had big afternoons for Northwest, combining for three home runs and 13 RBIs, as the Rangers rallied for a pair of 9-3 and 13-8 come-from-behind victories over Southwest Tennessee.
Northwest extended its win streak to three games in improving to 6-2 overall. The Saluqis dropped to 2-14.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning in the opener,
David Herrington's RBI-double scored
Justin Milam after a leadoff single to knot the game at 1-1.
Southwest immediately responded in its half of the sixth, using three consecutive hits, including Rusber Estrada's RBI-double, to retake the lead at 2-1 and chase Ranger starter
Harrison Sandridge after a great outing.
Sandridge scattered seven hits, one earned run, six strikeouts and no walks in 5.2 innings in a no-decision, making way for
Nathan Harrison.
Harrison worked out of trouble in the sixth and would toss the final 3.1 innings to earn his second win of the year.
Northwest rallied to take its first lead in the seventh, loading the bases with one down. Brooks then snuck an 0-2 pitch just over the wall in right field for a grand slam to give the Rangers their first lead at 5-2.
Northwest tacked on four more in the eighth, taking advantage of three walks, a hit-by-pitch and wild pitches, to pull away for a 9-3 victory. Brooks added a two-run single in the inning to finish the game 3-for-5 with six RBIs.
Southwest carried a 3-1 lead into the second in the nightcap, only to see Northwest tie the game in the third and score 10 runs over the final two frames for a 13-8 win.
Estrada's two-run homer got the scoring started in the first and Jacob Nobles' RBI-double made it 3-0 Saluqis.
Hunter White's RBI-double and Brooks' sac fly pulled Northwest to within 3-2 after three.
Southwest immediately responded with a four spot in the fourth, using two walks before Andrew Miller's three-run homer and a solo shot from Will Hampson.
Northwest rallied back in the fifth to take its first lead of the game. After a flyout and strikeout, Herrington, White, Brooks and
Spencer Cayten all followed with singles, two of them run-scoring. Davies then unloaded on a three-run home run to left to clear the bases and make it 9-7 Rangers.
Southwest got one back in the sixth before
J.G. Lipscomb entered in relief of
Cody McGarrity and escaped a bases loaded jam.
A four-run bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach and Lipscomb would strikeout the side in the seventh for his second save.
Trey Morrison picked up his first collegiate win in 1.1 relief innings, striking out a pair and not allowing a hit.
Northwest will continue a 12-game homestand on Friday at 2 p.m., welcoming Lake Land to Jim Miles Field.
