Davies' Huge Afternoon Lifts Northwest over Lake Land

SENATOBIA – Eight different Rangers had a hit on Friday afternoon and Northwest got solid starting pitching from its ace sophomore arms to sweep Lake Land by 7-2 and 13-2 finals.

Northwest extended its season-long win streak to five games in improving to 8-2 overall, while Lake Land fell to 2-4.

In the opener, Felix Baez's two-run home run to right on the seventh pitch of the game gave Lake Land a 2-0 lead before Northwest exploded for a six-run third to take a 7-2 victory.

Jarod Wright (1-0) bounced back nicely after a shaky start and retired 14 straight at one point, allowing just the two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Justin Milam started off Northwest's big third inning with a hit-by-pitch and was one of seven Rangers to reach base in the frame. Brooks Boolos' sac fly cut the Laker lead in half before a two-run single from Will Brooks, RBI-single from Aaron Campbell and two-run homer from Baron Davies gave Northwest its first lead of the day at 6-2.

Campbell's solo homer to left in the sixth capped a 3-for-3 game and seven unanswered runs for the Rangers.

Davies, who hit a two-run home run in the opener, was just getting warmed up. The freshman from Southaven put on a clinic to lead Northwest to a 13-2 win in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a double, two-run homer and three-run walk-off shot to right in the fifth to finish with seven RBIs.

A 1-hour, 10-run bottom of the first was more than enough for the run-rule win, with Northwest sending 13 batters to the plate and chasing Laker starter Brandon McNeely after recording only one out.

Lake Land got a pair back in the third on Adam Cox's RBI-single and a passed ball to make it 10-2 after three.

Davies then put the finishing touches on the Lakers in the fifth, hitting an opposite field three-run homer to right, his unprecedented fifth home run of the week and team-leading sixth of the year.

Dalton Minton (2-1) picked up his second win of the year, scattering one earned run off three hits with eight strikeouts.

Grant McMinn and Kyle Moore added two hits apiece to give the Rangers nine in five frames.

Northwest will close out a 12-game homestand on Thursday, March 2 at 2 p.m. against Calhoun.
