Rangers Fall in MACJC Tournament Semifinal

ELLISVILLE – The 2nd-ranked Jones County Bobcats used a five-run fifth inning to break open a 2-2 game and cruised to a 10-4 win over Northwest in the MACJC Tournament Semifinals Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.

Northwest dropped to 29-19 with the loss and will be the No. 4 seed in next weekend's NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Decatur. East Central went on to win the MACJC championship in dramatic fashion, 13-12, in the bottom of the ninth over JCJC to earn hosting rights.

Clint Sasser's solo home run to left in the bottom of the first gave JCJC the early 1-0 lead before Cody Cooper's two-out, two-run single in the second gave Northwest its first lead, 2-1.

JCJC tied the game at 2-2 in the third, using Fred Franklin's RBI-double off the wall in left to plate Dalton Skelton.

After Northwest stranded the go-ahead run at third in LeeMarcus Boyd in the top of the fifth, JCJC took advantage of its opportunities in the bottom half. A one-out single, hit-by-pitch and Tanner Huddleston RBI-single put the Bobcats on top at 3-2 and they would add two more runs off wild pitches and John Alan Wall's two-run double to stretch the advantage to 7-2.

Hunter Wilson's RBI-single in the seventh and a throwing error in the eighth, that allowed Jamell Newson to score, made the final tally 10-4 in favor of the Bobcats.

JCJC out-hit Northwest 12-5 on the day, led by Shelton Wallace's 3-for-5 effort. Wilson and Cooper combined to go 4-for-8 with three RBIs for the Rangers.

Calder Mikell (9-1), who was let off the hook in the early innings, got stronger as the game progressed. He scattered two hits, seven walks and four strikeouts for the win, making way for Logan Robbins who went the final three for his first save of the year. Peyton Plumlee (6-2) allowed seven runs off eight hits in 4.1 innings of work to take the loss.

Northwest will face East Central on Thursday, May 19, at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the region tournament. The nation's top-ranked teams, No. 1 LSU Eunice and No. 2 Jones County, will play the opener at noon.
