Jackson State Puts on Hitting Display in Sweep of Rangers

JACKSON, Tenn. – The host Jackson State Generals put on a hitting clinic Monday afternoon at Jack Martin Field, scoring 25 runs off 27 hits – 11 extra-base – to sweep a doubleheader over Northwest by 13-3 (5 inn.) and 12-10 finals.

JSCC improved to 12-6 with the sweep while the Rangers dropped their third straight to fall to 7-3 overall.

Northwest took an early 1-0 lead in its opening at-bat in Game 1. LeeMarcus Boyd singled, stole second and third and scored off a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Cody Cooper

JSCC responded with a run in its half of the first and added single runs in the ensuing two frames to take a 3-1 lead after three.

The Generals then exploded for four runs in the fourth to chase starter Colt Smith (1-1) and added six more in the fifth for the run-rule win. JSCC hit five home runs in the victory, including a walkoff, two-run homer by Alex Whitwell.

Seth Grant (2-0) went the distance for JSCC, scattering five hits and three runs while striking out three.

Northwest struck first again in Game 2, using a leadoff homer from Boyd and a balk to take a 2-0 lead.

But JSCC would respond in emphatic fashion in the bottom half of the first, taking a 4-2 lead on Whitwell's two-out grand slam to center.

The Generals increased their lead to 10-3 after three frames, adding a seventh home run of the game from Chris Patterson.

What looked to be another run-rule win for JSCC quickly changed with a big six-run sixth. A leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Aleck Hobson allowed the first nine Rangers to reach base safely. Boyd's RBI-single scored the first run, followed by Ryan Skalnik with a three-run blast and Spencer Cayten with a solo shot to make it 11-9 Generals.

The teams traded runs the next two at-bats and JSCC would hold on for a 12-10 win.

Hunter Wilson and Boyd had six of the Rangers' 13 hits. The top of the order was 6-for-14 with seven RBIs and five runs scored.

Weather permitting, Northwest will host Arkansas Baptist in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
