ARLINGTON, Tenn. – Southeastern Iowa jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and held off a late comeback effort from Northwest to knock off the Rangers 9-6 Friday morning at Arlington High School.
Northwest (7-4) was a last-minute fill-in for a team having travel issues as part of the Babe Howard JUCO Classic being held in Millington, Tenn., at USA Stadium. The Rangers committed to the single 9-inning game less than 24 hours before the 11 a.m. first pitch.
The Blackhawks (4-5) got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first inning off starter
Peyton Plumlee. The first five batters reached base safely, with SCC using three run-scoring hits and taking advantage of two hit-by-pitches and an error in the inning.
A two-run triple by Juwan Pedro and Wilberto Negron sac fly pushed the Blackhawk lead to 7-0 after three.
Playing on his former high school field,
Jarod Wright tossed three shutout innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed to keep the Rangers in striking distance.
It paid off in the fourth and fifth as Northwest was able to rally to pull within 7-4.
Hunter Wilson got the Rangers on the board with an RBI-single, scoring
Aaron Campbell after a leadoff single, and he would later come around to score.
Hunter Bishop added an RBI-single in the fourth and Campbell's RBI-groundout made it a three-run game in the fifth.
After SCC pushed back ahead 8-4 in the top of the eighth on a pair of Ranger errors, Wilson delivered another big two-run single in the bottom half to make it a two-run game.
Zach Saldivar's RBI-single in the ninth made the final 9-6 in favor of the Blackhawks.
Northwest out-hit SCC 12-8 on the day, led by
Cody Cooper's 3-for-4 day and two hits apiece from Wilson and Campbell, but three errors was the difference in the game with three unearned runs for the Blackhawks.
Andrew Stout improved to 3-0 on the mound in seven innings of work, scattering eight hits, nine strikeouts and four runs. Adonis Lao tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year. Plumlee dropped to 1-1 in three innings of action.
