Rangers Outlast Lions 4-3 in 11 innings

EUNICE, La. – LeeMarcus Boyd's two-out, RBI-bunt single scored Cody Cooper in the top of the 11th for the game-winning run in a 4-3 victory over East Mississippi Friday night to send the Rangers into the NJCAA Region 23 Baseball Semifinals.

With a pair of rain delays that lasted 53 and 57 minutes, the elimination game took over five hours to complete.

Northwest improved to 33-16 with its fourth consecutive win over the Lions and ended their season at 29-18.

The Rangers scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead after six. Stuart Chick's sac bunt and ensuing error plated the game's first run. Boyd's RBI-single made it 2-0 and Hunter Wilson's pinch-hit, sac fly to left made it 3-0.

With Austin Towles cruising on the mound with a three-hit shutout, EMCC's bats finally got going and the Lions rallied to tie it at 3-3 in the seventh. Chris McCullough's leadoff double got the rally going and Taylor Stafford, Kyle Liberto and Drew Standland all followed with RBIs.

The game stayed tied the ensuing three innings until the Rangers broke through in the 11th.

Cooper singled to start the inning, was sacrificed to second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored with two outs on Boyd's perfectly executed bunt single up the first base line.

The Ranger bullpen then sealed the victory, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings and not allowing a hit the final three innings. Ian Painter (5-2) got the win and Koby Busby picked up his team-leading sixth save.

Both teams finished with 10 hits on the afternoon. Boyd and Cooper combined to go 6-for-10 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Chick finished 2-for-4.

Northwest tied two single-season records with the win, getting its 13th team save and 126th stolen base of the year.

Northwest and Hinds will throw out first pitch at 3 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals at Bengal Stadium.
