DECATUR – Northwest and East Central split a baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to open MACJC play, with the Rangers taking a 2-1, 11-inning win in the opener and the Warriors bouncing back with a 4-2 win in the nightcap at Jamie Clark Stadium.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Senatobia, but moved to Decatur due to wet field conditions at Jim Miles Field. Northwest served as the home team for both games.
With the split, Northwest moved to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the MACJC while East Central moved to 8-6 overall (1-1 MACJC).
In a thrilling, 11-inning affair in the opener, freshman
Colt Smith tossed an absolute gem in a no-decision. Smith scattered a career-high nine strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work and allowed just one run off seven hits
– four of them in the ninth.
Northwest manufactured a run in its opening at-bat, using three walks, a hit-by-pitch and six stolen bases.
Jamell Newson walked and then stole second, third and home to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Smith was superb on the mound and shut down the Warriors the ensuing eight innings as the Rangers clung to a 1-0 lead.
East Central found a way to tie it in the ninth and eventually force extra innings, but not before some great defensive plays from the Ranger outfield. Cody Daigle singled and was then thrown out at second by Newson before Kyle McCullough singled and was thrown out at second by
Clay Casey. The Warriors scored their lone run off Jacob Huff's RBI-single, scoring Michael Davis who reached on an error and then scored on the single from second base.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Northwest found the game-winner in the 11th.
Dalton Dulin reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored off
James Clark's walk-off bloop single to left-center with two outs.
Koby Busby (1-0) got the win in 2.1 innings of hitless relief while Lane Fazende took the loss in 3.1 innings of relief.
Hunter Thrower went 4-for-4 with an RBI to help East Central win the finale 4-2, with all four runs coming in the fifth inning.
Northwest was no-hit through the first 4.2 innings before
Stuart Chick's infield single to second.
LeeMarcus Boyd's bases-loaded walk plated
Hunter Wilson for the Rangers' first run before a lineout ended the inning with the bases still loaded.
Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Northwest took advantage of two walks and a passed ball to plate Chick and had the go-ahead run at first with the bases loaded before a fielder's choice ended the game. The Rangers stranded seven on base over the final three frames.
Austin Towles scattered six hits, four runs (one earned), two walks and a strikeout in 4.2 innings in the loss while Will Myers got the win for East Central and Ben Cooley registered the save.
Weather permitting, Northwest will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 at Pearl River.
