Box Score RAYMOND – In a back-and-forth turnover filled first half which saw Northwest trail just 10-7, Hinds came out of the locker room sizzling with 21 third quarter points to pull away for a 31-17 win Thursday night.
Hinds improved to 3-2 overall while Northwest dropped to 1-4. It marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2009 and the Rangers lead the all-time series 26-18-3.
The Eagles ran for 228 yards on the night, 62 of them coming on a touchdown run from Tyus Raine just 51 seconds into the game to give Hinds an early 7-0 lead. It was the only points scored in the opening quarter.
Joseph Houston connected on a 36-yard field goal to give Hinds a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter as the Eagles capitalized on a short field after a sack by OJ O'Neal and recovered fumble by Jamarcus James.
Northwest got on the board with just over 3 minutes to play in the opening half when
Justin Crawford ran around the right edge for a 1-yard touchdown. Crawford carried it five times on the drive for 15 yards and
Kentrell Spencer had a big 26-yard reception that setup the score.
Treston DeCoud's interception on the Rangers' own 15-yard line, his team-leading fourth of the year, kept it a field goal game at the half.
Terry Caldwell returned the pick to the 50-yard line before being tackled by Joshua Dixon, taking the handoff from DeCoud.
James Summers, Hinds' workhorse all night and all season long, took the opening carry of the second half 58 yards to the Northwest 20-yard line and punched it in three plays later to give the Eagles a 17-7 lead.
The ensuing kickoff provided just a taste of the physical play and flag-filled type of game it was when
Jarcquarius Clark (Northwest) and Tommy Boone (Hinds) were tangled up on the ground at least 30 yards away from the play and ejected minutes later.
The two teams combined for 17 penalties for 159 yards on the evening. The scuffle seemed to ignite the home team and Hinds quickly used the momentum to score 21 points to take a 31-10 lead after three quarters.
Two promising fourth quarter drives for Northwest both ended on
Karsten Miller interceptions in the end zone and the Hinds 38-yard line. Keith Turner was responsible for both.
Marcel Newson scored the lone touchdown of the second half for the Rangers on special teams, taking a punt 53 yards to the house with 1:37 to play. It marked the 15th punt return for a score in school history and the first since Oct. 27, 2012 (Lawon Debardelaben).
Hinds outgained Northwest by a slight 349-333 margin and capitalized off four Ranger turnovers.
Miller finished 19-of-37 for 282 yards with two picks and no touchdowns and was sacked five times. He connected with six different receivers on the night, led by
Jamarius Mabry with a career-high eight catches for 114 yards. Crawford finished with 76 yards and a TD on 25 carries.
Terry Caldwell, who leads the MACJC in tackles, had a game-high 11 tackles as part of a Ranger defense that had 11 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, five quarterback hurries, three breakups and an interception.
