Rangers Come Up Short Against Tigers, 34-21

Box Score SENATOBIA – The aerial attack of Northeast's Jerrard Randall and Jeremy Liggins, two former LSU Tigers who combined for 360 yards passing and four touchdowns, helped propel the Tigers past Northwest 34-21 Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.

Northeast improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the north while Northwest dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in north division play. The Rangers still lead the all-time series 35-17-2.

Northeast racked up 533 yards of total offense and was in control early. The Tigers scored touchdowns on each of their first two possessions and led 14-0 after one quarter.

The Rangers, however, fought back with 14 unanswered in the second quarter to tie the game as Karsten Miller connected with D'Montrise Swinney for a 20-yard strike and Kentrell Spencer for a 30-yard score.

Randall put Northeast back up less than 2 minutes later, bombing a 65-yard touchdown pass to LaVontis Smith that covered a full 70 yards in the air. Smith was wide open in the secondary after a busted assignment and went in untouched.

Liggins capped a big first half for the Tigers a series later, as he connected with Smith for a 27-yard touchdown that put Northeast up 27-14 at the break.

Northeast ran 29 plays for 330 yards in the first half against 37 plays for 212 yards for Northwest.

Neither team got anything going the first two drives of the third quarter, until Northwest capitalized off a Northeast turnover. Ja'Vinte Gilliam delivered a big hit to Smith after a 24-yard gain and Keith Reynolds Jr. recovered the fumble on the Rangers' 1-yard line.

Northwest proceeded to drive 99 yards on eight plays over 4:06, capped by Miller's 31-yard touchdown pass to Swinney, to bring the score within 27-21 after three quarters. Miller was 5-for-6 on the drive for 98 yards.

Randall and the Tigers responded their ensuing drive to start the fourth quarter, going 75 yards on 10 plays, to push back in front 34-21. Liggins capped the drive with a 25-yard TD to Smith, his third of the night.

Northwest couldn't find an answer in the final quarter, turning it over on downs and having to punt the ball back to Northeast with 4:55 to play. The Tigers then ran out the clock and took a knee on the Rangers' 8-yard line to seal the victory.

The Rangers turned in their best offensive output of the season with 385 yards of total offense, led by Miller who went 26-for-39 for 348 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He hit six different receivers, including Swinney eight times for 110 yards and two scores and Josh Hamilton seven times for 104 yards.

Damian Baker finished with 77 yards on 17 carries on now needs 668 yards over the final five games to break the school's career rushing record set during the 1991-92 season (LaVelle Danzy). He added five catches for 37 yards in the game.

Defensively, Chris Fox and Demetrius Farmer had eight tackles apiece, followed by Sharkey Luna with seven in his first collegiate start and Marcel Newson and Kalen Coleman with six stops.

Northwest will take to the road next Saturday, Sept. 28, playing 9th-ranked Itawamba (4-0, 2-0 north) for its Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. from Lambert Stadium.
