Box Score SENATOBIA - With four second half goals, the Northwest Mississippi Community College women's soccer team (9-3, 4-3) earned a 4-0 shutout victory over the Meridian Community College Eagles (7-5-2, 4-3) at the Ranger Soccer Complex.
"We knew coming into it that they were a team that didn't really score a lot of goals, but they didn't concede a lot of goals either," Head Coach James Beattie said. "We knew it was going to be a tight game."
Northwest dominated possession from the first whistle. Although the Rangers took 16 shots, with nine of them being on goal, NWCC was not able to capitalize on their numerous chances and went into the break frustrated and tied at 0-0.
"These are the games that are going to be frustrating at times, and I think in the first half we created a lot of chances just didn't really get a breakthrough," Beattie said. "In the second half, as soon as we got the first one it really started to open and we got a lot more comfortable."
NWCC was able to grab three goals in six minutes in the second half.
The breakthrough finally came in the 52nd minute when freshman Hayden Moneymaker won possession of the ball on the left side of the field. Moneymaker then took on her defender 1 v. 1, found space, and shot the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
The second goal came three minutes later in the 55th minute when freshman Sunshine Little sent in a cross for a Yazzlyn Alex finish.
Northwest was able to make the score 3-0 in the 58th minute when Alex and Little swapped roles with Alex assisting Little's goal.
"I just wanted it today," Little said. "It was just all drive. I've been down lately and just think that I got confidence from playing well."
The final goal came when sophomore forward Mary Logan Clark was able to slot home Brooke Davis' pass in the 80th minute.
After suffering another ranked defeat on Thursday to #9 Pearl River, the Rangers knew that they needed to change some things, and the first that needed to change was the team's mindset.
"We've been trying to change our mindset from wanting to win to needing to win," Little said. "We needed to win today to get our momentum back, especially going into the big game Friday."
Northwest will look to earn Rangers' first ranked MACCC victory when they travel to Perkinston to take on the #6 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs (10-1-1, 6-1) on Friday, October 16, at 4:00 p.m.
"Any time we play a ranked team it's a big game, and they're well coached and a good team," Beattie said. "We need to work hard. In the games that we have dropped, the work rate is something that we've collectively said has not been on."
