LIVINGSTON, Ala. - For the second weekend in a row, bull riding and steer wrestling proved to be the top two events for the Northwest men's rodeo team.
Dakota Smith and
Luke Stanley topped the individual bull riding standings, with Smith placing first overall and Stanley earning second.
Will Collier also topped the standings in steer wrestling, as the Rangers finished third overall with 485 team points.
Northwest placed behind event-winners Missouri Valley College (555), while West Alabama finished second at 550 points. A total of nine men's teams were in competition over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rangers finished fourth with 100 team points, finishing behind overall winners West Alabama (280), runners-up Missouri Valley College (260) and third-place finishers Pearl River (260).
Smith totaled 60 points in the opening round, but none in the second round. However, he received 10 more points than Stanley in the first round and with Stanley receiving no score in the second, Smith finished with 120 total points to earn the win.
Collier also topped steer wrestling for the second consecutive week, finishing with 165 total points. His 4.9 first round score earned him 55 points, while his 6.5 second round score gave him 50 more points, for an 11.4 total average.
Finishing just behind Collier was teammate
Christian Cagle, whose 5.1 first round score netted him 40 points out of the gate. Cagle then followed up with an 8.7 second round score, earning 30 additional points and an average of 13.8 for 120 total points.
Wyatt Newman and
Brayden Mahon also recorded points in steer wrestling for the weekend, each totaling 30 points and tying for sixth place.
Cagle also placed second in the men's all-around standings with 140 total points, after receiving 20 points in calf roping. Cagle placed seventh in that event, while
Tate Williams earned a second-place finish with 140 total points, finishing just 20 points behind Kota Wilhite (West Alabama).
Meanwhile,
Delaney Naifeh led the Lady Rangers yet again, placing second in barrel racing and earning all 100 of the team's points. The Covington, Tenn. native bounced back from the first round to earn a 16.19 time in the second round, tallying 50 points and 50 more for the average.
Northwest will be back in action this weekend at the Boll Weevil Stampede, hosted by the University of Arkansas-Monticello. The event is slated to run October 3-5.
