Rangers see improvement with six making it back to the short go at East Mississippi

Weekley with 80 All-Around points between steer wrestling and team roping

MERIDIAN – It was an improved showing for the Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo team as the men and women both picked-up team points in their second rodeo of the spring.

The Rangers were on the road at the 14th Annual East Mississippi Community College Intercollegiate Rodeo at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center where the men finished in seventh for the second consecutive week and the women took home sixth.

Northwest's best showing came in steer wrestling where three Rangers made it back, led by Trey Weekley who was the fourth fastest time in the long go with a 6.3 on his first steer for 30 points. He failed to catch on his second steer in the short go and had to settle for just the 30 points for the weekend.

Will Collier also added points to his season totals, getting back to the short go with a 15.8 and then getting out of the gate with a 5.5 in the short go for the third fastest time of the go and the third fastest time of the rodeo.

Collier netted 60 points with the 40 from the short go getting paired with a fifth-place finish in the average and 20 more points in the standings.

Brayden Mahon also made it back to the short go and his 5.8 was good for fourth in the round, but his 16.9 from the first run left him outside of the top six in the average.

The weekend bumps Collier into the top four of the Ozark Region standings with 260 points while Mahon continues to hold onto a top three position with the extra points giving him 340 on the year.

Weekley added to his success at the event with a trip back to the short go in team roping with his partner Austin Brooks out of the University of West Alabama. The duo caught their first steer in 8.8 seconds to qualify in eighth place, and their time of 13.7 in the short go was good for fifth in the go.

That also pushed them to fourth in the average for a 50-point weekend. It was the first points this year in team roping for the sophomore and gave him points in a third event as he makes a push for an all-around spot.

On the women's side, Chance Raegan picked up her first points of the season in goat tying after making it back to the short go with a first run of eight seconds flat and came back with a 7.9 on her second for the fifth best time in the go. That also moved her to fifth in the average for a 40-point weekend.

The Rangers will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Poplarville for the Pearl River Rodeo beginning on March 19th with the final performance on the 21st.
