JACKSON - After helping Northwest to an MACCC North Division title, the 2024 MACCC Championship and an appearance in the NJCAA Division I Playoffs, eight Rangers have been selected for All-NJCAA Region 23 accolades.
Selections for all-region honors were announced Tuesday morning, which was accompanied by tailbackÂ
D'mariun Perteet earning All-NJCAA Region 23 Player of the Year recognition and Northwest head coach
Benjy Parker receiving All-NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year honors.
Joining Perteet for All-NJCAA Region 23 recognition was quarterback
Zach Wilcke, offensive linemen
LaParka Langston and
Jakheem Shumpert, defensive lineman duo
D.J. Burgess and
Tyeland Coleman, and defensive backs
Fredd Adams and
Keshawn Davila.
A native of Courtland, Miss., Perteet received MACCC North Division Player of the Year last month, while also earning First Team All-MACCC North Division honors. The recent Coastal Carolina signee finished the season with 1,360 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 257 attempts, the program's new single-season record. His 16 scores also are tied for fifth-most in a single season and are the most in a season since Jaquerrious Williams' 17 touchdowns in 2021.
While Perteet currently ranks second nationally in rushing yards per game (113.4) and third in rushing touchdowns, he led the MACCC in both categories. He also finished with 100 or more rushing yards in eight games this season, including a career-high 189 yards against Holmes. Additionally, Perteet remains as a top finalist for the JUCOWeekly Trophy.
After being announced as the MACCC North Division Coach of the Year last month, Parker has now garnered his second coaching award this season. Since taking over the head coaching reigns prior to the 2016 season, Parker has guided Northwest to the conference playoffs every season and his teams have won seven or more games every year, excluding the COVID-19 shortened 6-0 record during the fall of 2020.
Parker has won five MACCC North Division titles since 2016 and three conference championships (2020, 2021, 2024). Since the inception of the NJCAA Division I Football Playoffs in 2021, Parker has guided Northwest to the national postseason in three of the last four seasons, more than any other MACCC program.
A native of Bruce, Parker holds an overall record of 75-21 and a 47-7 mark in division play. While he remains far behind the 201 career wins by all-time winningest head coach Bobby Franklin, Parker's .781 overall winning percentage is historically the best among all Northwest coaches. His .870 winning percentage in the MACCC North Division is also the best in program history.
In his lone season with Northwest, Wilcke finished with 164 completions and 15 touchdowns on 283 attempts. The Hernando native and former Southern Miss transfer finished the season ranked fifth in the conference in both passing touchdowns and passing yards per game (170.9).
Wilcke also finished the season with 2,051 passing yards, continuing a streak of Northwest quarterbacks that have finished with 2,000 or more passing yards in a season. The Rangers have had four straight years with a 2,000-yard passer and have achieved the same feat in seven of the last eight seasons, aside from a COVID-shortened six-game campaign in 2020. (The last full season Northwest went without a 2,000-yard passer was 2016.)
Offensive linemen Langston and Shumpert have caught the eyes of numerous Division I programs and other four-year schools throughout the season, as the two have helped anchor a Northwest offensive line that has paved the way for 2,000-plus rushing yards and over 2,000 receiving yards as well. Both players have played in 10 of the team's 11 games this season.
Recently, Shumpert signed with Mississippi State last week ahead of the Rangers' NJCAA Semifinal matchup at Iowa Western. Langston has yet to sign, but is continuing to receive numerous offers from several notable Division I programs.
Defense has been a major factor in the Rangers' success this season and the duo of Burgess and Coleman are a huge reason why. Burgess, last season's All-MACCC Defensive Player of the Year, finished seventh on the team in total tackles (35), but second in sacks (4.5) and tied for fourth in tackles-for-loss (6.5). Additionally, the Oxford native and son of NFL veteran Derrick Burgess, ranked second on the team with seven quarterback hurries.
Meanwhile, Coleman finished ninth on the team with 32 total tackles, tied for seventh in TFLs (3.5) and tied for seventh in sacks (1.5). The sophomore from Terry also tied for third with three quarterback hurries.
Coleman recently signed with Florida State University, picking the Seminoles over Illinois and Mississippi State, among others. Burgess has yet to sign, but is still receiving offers from numerous Division I programs, including Liberty and Memphis.
Adams and Davila patrolled the secondary for Northwest, and teamed up for 11 combined interceptions. Adams, a native of Tupelo, finished the season with eight picks, including four alone in the Rangers' victory against East Mississippi and one in the NJCAA Semifinals at Iowa Western. He also led the team with 13 pass breakups, and finished with 178 interception yards, the third-most in a single season and the most by any Northwest player since Malikia Griffin (190 INT yards; 1995).
Adams also has 35 total tackles and recently signed with Coastal Carolina.
Meanwhile, Davila also made his presence felt during his two seasons at Northwest. The Tampa, Fla. native locked down opposing receivers all season long, earning seven pass breakups and three interceptions. In his career, he has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, joining the aforementioned group of Rangers ranking third in the career record books. Davila also has 25 tackles to his credit, including a tackle-for-loss.
Davila has been highly coveted by over half the nation's FBS and FCS programs, raking in nearly 75 Division I offers dating back to the conclusion of his freshman year. The No. 1-rated JUCO cornerback plans to announce his commitment on Thursday, December 12, with his latest top three including Arkansas, UCLA and Virginia Tech.
Northwest finished the 2024 season with a 10-2 record, the second 10-win season in the past three years. Including NJCAA bowl games and NJCAA playoff games, the Rangers have made an appearance on the national postseason stage in five of the last nine seasons.
