CHARLOTTE - Nearly 24 hours after being voted as the MACCC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, Northwest linebacker
Caulen Dunn and receiver
M.J. Johnson have been chosen for the same honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
This marks the second time the Rangers have been awarded a national player of the week this season, after kicker/punter
Hayden Wolfe garnered NJCAA Special Teams POTW accolades following his collegiate debut against Pearl River.
Dunn, a native of Olive Branch and former Alabama State transfer, racked up an eye-popping 23 tackles in the Rangers' MACCC Semifinal victory against Mississippi Gulf Coast last weekend. His 23 total tackles are the most recorded in a single game by any Northwest player since October 12, 1995, when Melton Glover totaled 24 tackles in a contest against Mississippi Delta. Glover and Cassius Ware share the program's single-game tackles record with 24 apiece.
As for Johnson, the Enterprise, Ala. native made a significant difference on kickoff returns, racking up 152 yards on five kick returns. The Troy University transfer didn't score a touchdown on special teams, but his yardage helped set up two scoring drives for Northwest, including the team's final scoring possession midway through the fourth quarter.
Northwest will face No. 7 East Central for the MACCC Championship on Saturday, November 16. Kickoff from Bailey Stadium in Decatur is set for 2 P.M.
