MEMPHIS - After spending the previous few seasons with the Memphis Americans of the National Indoor Soccer League, Northwest women's soccer alumni
Angel Hailey and Cheyenne Smith are joining a new franchise for the 2024 season.
In the past couple of weeks, the newly-formed Memphis Mayhem has announced its inaugural roster, which includes Hailey and Smith. The team will compete in the Premier Arena Soccer League, with its matches played at Greenfield Arena.
Hailey started the past two seasons as the primary goalkeeper for the Memphis Americans, winning the Golden Glove Award both times and helping the Americans to back-to-back NISL titles. Additionally, the Southaven native has served on the Northwest women's soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, being part of back-to-back national tournament appearances for the Lady Rangers.
Hailey spent two seasons at Northwest from 2017-18, leading the NJCAA in total saves during her sophomore campaign. She also currently holds the program's career record for saves (255).
Following her Northwest career, Hailey signed with ULM and then finished out her collegiate career at the University of Montevallo for the 2020-21 seasons. She played 503 minutes in six matches, recording a 2-2-1 record and 16 saves during a shortened spring 2021 season. She returned for five matches during her final season, garnering 17 saves in 480 minutes for the Lady Falcons.
Smith began her post-college career with the Americans last season, after concluding her collegiate career at Christian Brothers University. The Memphis native spent the 2018-19 seasons with the Lady Rangers, finishing ninth in program history with 13 career goals. The Memphis Catholic School alumnus scored all but one of her career goals during a stellar freshman season, which included a career-best four goals in a 4-2 win against East Central on September 5, 2018.
At CBU, Smith went from playing in just seven matches during the 2020 campaign to starting in 13 of 15 matches played during the 2022 season. She netted 17 goals during her final season with the Lady Bucs, closing her CBU career with 20 goals and five assists.
Additionally, another Northwest connection has also made the Mayhem roster. Caitlan Dew spent one season at Northwest in 2017, before transferring to Southwest Tennessee for the 2018 campaign. The Germantown, Tenn. native later joined Christian Brothers University, spending the 2019-21 seasons with the Lady Bucs.
No official schedule has been released yet for the Mayhem or any other teams in the PASL.
