Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Mary Grace Black

Northwest women's soccer earns a commanding 5-0 victory over #3 MGCCC

Five different Rangers found the back of the net.

PERKINSTON - The Northwest Mississippi Community College women's soccer team (10-3, 5-3) earned a statement 5-0 victory over the #3 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs (10-2-1, 6-2) at the MGCCC Soccer Complex.

The Rangers knew that this was a must win game before the whistle blew, and fans could tell that NWCC was playing with a sense of purpose.

Possession was pretty evenly balanced throughout the first several minutes of the first half. However, Northwest quickly started to pepper MGCCC's goalkeeper with shots before Olivia Miller was able to slot in Kassidy McMillan's pass for the first goal of the afternoon in the 25th minute.

Freshman Yazzlyn Alex was able to showcase her incredible speed and tenacity when she tracked down a poorly timed and communicated pass from a Bulldog defender to their goalie. After stealing the pass, Alex was able to sink the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-0 going into half time.

Although the Rangers were up 2-0, they knew that they could not let up. The MACCC is arguably the best conference in the country with the toughest competition. No team is ever completely out of the game.

The Rangers would quickly put the game to bed in the second half.

Freshman substitute Sunshine Little extended the Ranger lead to 3-0 when she scored a beautiful unassisted goal from outside the 18 yard box.

Sophomore forward Mary Logan Clark tallied her first assist of the season when Hayden Moneymaker was able to neatly tap her cross into the back of the net in the 54th minute.

The last goal of the game came after Maggie Pace sent McMillan's corner into the back of the net.

The Bulldog defense had only let in five goals the entire season, and the five goals scored by the Rangers quickly doubled that tally.

Once again the Ranger defense led by sophomore defender Lena Scholze and freshman goalkeeper Lydia Knabb only faced three shots-on-goal the entire game and earned the clean sheet.

Northwest will look to build on their positive momentum when they travel to Fulton to face Itawamba Community College (5-4, 4-4) at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 20.
