MERIDIAN - Last weekend's spring rodeo opener was a successful one for the Northwest men's rodeo team, as the Rangers tied for sixth place overall out of 10 teams.
Northwest collected 160 team points along with Southern Arkansas University, while placing ahead of Three Rivers College, Arkansas-Monticello and Murray State. The women's team did not place.
Colby Burgess provided Northwest with its highest individual finish, earning 77.5 points and placing third in bull riding. The sophomore from Houlka finished just a half point behind Pearl River's Tyler Housley, the weekend's runner-up, and moved to second place in the latest Ozark Region standings with a season total of 190 points.
In tie-down roping,
David Holt collected 24.4 points for a fifth-place finish, tying him for fifth in the season standings with West Alabama's Blayne Saine.
Although the Northwest women did not place, freshman barrel racer
Darby Toole remains in the season standings at 11th. As a team, the Lady Rangers check in at No. 8 in the most recent team standings with 225 points, while the Northwest men are ninth with 410 team points.
Next up for Northwest is another trip down south, this time to Poplarville for the Pearl River Rodeo. The event runs from March 23-25 at the Pearl River County Fairgrounds and general admission tickets remain available for $10.
