PULASKI, Tenn. - Northwest outfielder
Landon Rogers will continue his baseball career at the four-year level next season after signing with the University of Tennessee Southern this week.
Rogers becomes the eighth member of the 2022 Northwest baseball squad to take his talents to the four-year level. The Olive Branch native and redshirt sophomore finished as the team's third-leading hitter, totaling a .338 batting average with nine doubles, four triples, five home runs and 35 runs batted in.Â
One of Rogers' best offensive performances came in the postseason at Meridian during a decisive Game 3 on May 7. While helping Northwest to the series upset against the Eagles, Rogers batted 3-for-6 with a double as the Rangers rallied for the extra-innings victory.
Throughout the 2022 season, Rogers was just as dangerous on the basepaths and in the field as well. He was 19-of-21 in stolen bases this season and finished with a .971 fielding percentage, which included 62 putouts in 69 chances.
After missing the shortened 2020 season due to injury, Rogers bounced back nicely as a redshirt freshman in 2021, batting .267 with six doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs. One of his best offensive performances that season came against Northeast, where he finished 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs.
Rogers will join seven more of his Northwest teammates in competing at the four-year level, a list that includes pitchers
John Luke Marlin (UAB),
Connor Spencer (Southeastern Louisiana),
Zach Willingham (South Alabama),
Colton Presley (Delta State), catcher
Ryan Lee (Little Rock) and outfielders
Caleb Hobson (UT Martin) and
Peeko Townsend (Jackson State).
Formerly known as Martin Methodist College, UT Southern competes in the Mid-South Conference as a member of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
