MEMPHIS - Former Northwest and current Memphis Americans' goalkeeper Angel Hailey was recentely named the Goalkeeper of the Year by the National Indoor Soccer League.
Hailey led the NISL in all major categories with 15 wins, .849 save percentage, 2.3 goals against average and three shutouts. Hailey recorded the first shutout in NISL history on February 6 against the Fayetteville Fury. She later recorded her best performance against the Rome Gladiators on December 30, where she made 19 saves in the Americans' 5-4 victory.
Angel, a Southaven native and Southaven High alumnus, played two seasons for the Lady Rangers and former coach Levi Nunnally from 2017-18, totaling 255 career saves and surpassing the program's previous record of 252, set by Ashley Nelson during the 2014-15 seasons. Hailey started 19 of 28 career matches in net, posting a 10-10-1 record with nine combined shutouts in 1,850 minutes of action.
Spending most of her freshman season as a reserve, Hailey still compiled 65 saves in 13 games with five starts. She also finished with a 7-1 record and helped Northwest to an 11-6 mark and the MACJC semifinals, before recording 190 saves as a sophomore, leading the conference and the NJCAA.
Hailey also finished with an .848 save percentage and 2.49 goals against average in nearly 1,230 minutes during her 2018 season. She was an NJCAA and MACJC All-Academic Team selection and three-time honoree on Northwest's Vice President's List.
Hailey signed with ULM for the 2019 season and spent one season at the Division I level, logging 641 minutes and collecting 35 saves against 16 goals. Her only winning decision came in a 1-0 victory against Southern Miss on Sept. 1, 2019, where she played a full 90 minutes and collected a season-high 11 saves.
From there, Hailey joined the University of Montevallo for the 2020-21 seasons. She played 503 minutes in six matches, recording a 2-2-1 record and 16 saves during a shortened spring 2021 season. She returned for five matches this fall, garnering 17 saves in 480 minutes for the Lady Falcons.
"It is both an honor and a blessing to be named goalkeeper of the year", Hailey said. "One of my personal goals was to become the league's best goalkeeper, with the most shutouts, the fewest goals allowed and the highest save percentage. Now that I've accomplished those goals, I'm looking forward to breaking my own record next season."
Founded in January 2021, the National Indoor Soccer League fielded four teams for its inaugural season. Hailey helped guide the Memphis Americans to the league's first women's championship.
