CHARLOTTE - Just over a week removed from winning its second consecutive MACCC championship, the nationally-ranked Northwest Rangers will compete in the inaugural NJCAA Division I Football Playoff.
Northwest, which checked in at No. 3 in Monday's final NJCAA rankings, will travel to second-ranked New Mexico Military Institute, the champions of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. The game will take place on Sunday, December 5 at the Wool Bowl in Roswell, N.M., with a kickoff time set for 3 P.M. Central (2 P.M. Mountain).
Tickets to each semifinal game will be available to purchase in advance for $15 general admission. All tickets will be available on
NJCAA.org/tickets and the game will be broadcasted live on the
NJCAA Network for a $10 fee.
Northwest started the season with a 3-2 record, which included losses to Jones College and East Mississippi, both of whom spent time at No. 1 in the national rankings. From there, the Rangers tore through the month of October with a 4-0 record and victories against nationally-ranked Coahoma and Mississippi Gulf Coast, followed by wins against Itawamba and Mississippi Delta to wrap up the No. 2 seed from the MACCC North Division.
In the MACCC Playoffs, the Rangers exacted revenge against then-No. 2 Jones College with a 26-20 semifinal victory, before a 56-21 blowout of No. 7 Hinds in the MACCC Championship. The win helped Northwest to its current 9-2 overall record and its second straight conference title.
Northwest features one of the top passers in the nation in terms of completion percentage, as
Michael Hiers owns a 71.4 completion rate and ranks second in passing yards with 2,353. The Birmingham native now ranks fifth in program history in passing yards, surpassing Bobby Robison (2001-02) during the Rangers' victory against Hinds.
Hiers' top target,
D.T. Sheffield, was recently named the MACCC North Division Offensive MVP after boasting 981 yards on 51 receptions and 10 touchdowns. The Corinth native ranks second in the nation in receiving yards and is tied for second in receiving touchdowns.
Northwest tailback
Jaquerrious Williams has also been on a tear this season, collecting 15 touchdowns and 1,130 yards so far this season, good for second and third in the country respectively.
New Mexico Military Institute finished the season 10-1 overall and boasts a nation-high 3,022 rushing yards. Anthony Grant leads the Broncos' rushing attack with 1,140 yards this season.
The winner of the contest against the Rangers and the Broncos will advance to the 2021 NJCAA Division I Football Championship on Friday, December 17. The game will take place at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock at 7 P.M. Central and will be carried on CBS Sports Network.
