Cassius Ware Named to Liberty Bowl All-1990's Team

MEMPHIS – Former Northwest and Ole Miss linebacker Cassius Ware was named to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl's all-1990s decade team on Tuesday morning, according to the game's Twitter account.

Ware posted 10 tackles and two sacks in the 1992 Liberty Bowl as Ole Miss defeated Air Force 13-0, helping Billy Brewer and the Rebels to an 8-3 finish. For his efforts, Ware earned the game's Most Valuable Player honors.

A 2012 inductee into the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame, Ware spent the 1990-91 seasons at Northwest and helped the Rangers to the 1990 MACJC North Division championship. As a sophomore, Ware and the Rangers finished as the MACJC champions and posted an 11-1 overall record, the only loss coming in the Mid-America Bowl to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

A two-time MACJC All-State selection, Ware holds the record with Melton Glover (1995) at Northwest for the most tackles in a single game with 24 against Southwest on Oct. 31, 1991, and also had a 19-tackle game against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Ware finds his name among the all-time leaders in numerous other categories. For his career, he ranks fifth in assisted tackles (93), tied for sixth in forced fumbles (7) and is eighth in total tackles (186) and interceptions (10). His 130 tackles his sophomore season ranks fifth-most in a single-season.

After Northwest, Ware was a standout player for Ole Miss, lettering during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. His most noteworthy play was a 91-yard fumble return against Auburn in their 1992 matchup.

Ware tried out for the Indianapolis Colts and played in the Canadian Football League shortly for the British Columbia Lions. He played one season with the Memphis Pharaohs before retiring from football.
