ALBUQUERQUE - Former Northwest safety
Jerrick Reed II has made a significant impact during his last two seasons at New Mexico and he was rewarded for his contributions last week with a first team All-Mountain West selection.
Not only was Reed the Lobos' lone first team selection this season but he is also the first non-specialist player from New Mexico to earn First Team All-Mountain West honors since 2014.
Reed, a junior, led the Mountain West Conference in interceptions (4) and interceptions per game (0.57) this season. Reed's four interceptions through seven games were the most by the Lobos since 2014, and it equaled the team total from a year ago. His seven passes defended (three break-ups and four picks) is second in the Mountain West.
An Olive Branch native, Reed spent one season at Northwest in 2018 and finished third among Ranger defenders with 71 tackles, three PBUs and two interceptions. He posted two games with 10 or more tackles, including a career-high 19 tackles in a loss to East Mississippi on October 4. Northwest finished the season at 8-2 overall and earned a trip to the first round of the MACJC playoffs.
New Mexico finished the 2020 season at 2-5 overall, winning its last two games against Wyoming and Fresno State.
